While university libraries have taken on numerous functions over the years, such as serving as places for students to study, meet with others, and interact with technology, one component that has always been central to their mission has been housing books.
But plans at the University of Denver to permanently move four-fifths of the Penrose Library’s holdings to an...

Facebook Prank Backfires On Two Preteen Girls →
A Facebook prank is backfiring badly on two girls from Issaquah, Wash., aged 11 and 12, who are being charged with cyberstalking and first-degree computer trespassing.
The two girls allegedly obtained the Facebook password of classmate Leslie Cote and hacked her account — who asked that her name be revealed in order to call attention to the issue.
The duo then posted sexually explicit...

The Real LMS Failure (Hint: We Should Look in the... →
Interesting read over at Inside Higher Ed:
The fact is that it matters little to our students if the LMS is proprietary or open source, and the advanced features we spend so much time wishing for are useless without investments that result in good course design. If we want to get the most out of whatever LMS we have on campus we need to:
Invest in people to partner with our faculty to help...

Uploading Files to Google Docs Just Got Easier →
Last fall, Google Docs users gained the ability to drag and drop files from the desktop to the upload page. Now Google has announced that it will be rolling out a few more features to make that process of uploading even easier.
The first new feature will help those who tend to upload a lot of documents: Google has added the ability to upload folders, not just individual files. This upload...

My Top 3 Brainstorming Tools →
I’ve always liked Inspiration and Kidspiration for quick, easy to use ways of brainstorming. But with a $900 price tag for a 20 computer license, there just didn’t seem to be any reason to pay that money when there are several robust, free alternatives. In the past couple of years, these alternatives have come close to matching, and in many aspects, surpassing what Inspiration and ...

Get the most out of Twitter
I’m teaching a new online course, aimed at helping teachers integrate Twitter, Glogster and other social media into the K-12 classroom. We begin with Twitter, because most teachers know nothing about it and it’s a wonderful way to communicate with students and other teachers.
We’re beginning with the absolute basics — registering for an...

Plagiarism Appears to Be Going Social →
infoneer-pulse:
The Web is going social. And now it seems that plagiarism might be heading that way, too.
A new study found that social and user-generated Web sites are the most popular sources for student copying. Academic sites come in second, while paper mills and cheat sites are third.

A Tumblr Survey Update
Earlier this week I’d offered to share an update on two of the Tumblr Survey questions if it hit 500 respondents. Though it didn’t make that milestone by the time I’d set, yesterday was an outstanding day; the pool is now much larger.
As promised, I wanted to follow-through and share updates on the most popular tracked tags, and the improvement everyone would most like to see on...

I bought one and it’s the cheapest t-shirt I’ve ever paid $20 for. Wore it once, washed it in cold water, tumble dry low, and it’s now almost two sizes smaller. Garbage.

Does anyone have any suggestions for active learners for second language learners? I’ve tried games and that failed miserably. I was thinking of assigning certain students different structures of a sentence. Then I would get them to arrange themselves to make a coherent sentence. Hopefully this idea works. Any suggestions?
