Windows Migration Question for My Tech People

Quick Update (so I don’t cause any confusion): I‘m looking for a comprehensive software solution. Something that will migrate over the majority of files and settings in an automated way. If it’s a manual process, I’m convinced I will miss something.

Pardon my ignorance here, but I primarily work in a Mac environment. This is the situation:

I have a friend who has a Windows Vista laptop. It was dying so I got them a Windows 7 laptop as a gift. My question is this: What is the easiest/cheapest (preferably free) way to migrate her files and settings from the Vista laptop to the Windows 7 laptop? I’d hate to tell her to just use an external, because I know things will be overlooked. Firefox sync was a lifesaver on the browser front, but everything else is a pain.

For reference, I do have access to a crossover cable, but she can also plug in/connect to her home wi-fi for any file transfers.

    Any thoughts?

    3. gjmueller answered: I’ve always made a list & move with external hdd. Try “Transfer files and settings from another computer” with “Windows Easy Transfer”
    4. pablophonic answered: USB to USB data transfer cable, probably.
