The standard university badges (pictured in order below) include Bookworm Bender (for checking into a library or study area after midnight), Smells Like School Spirit (for five checkins to a sports venue), Quad Squatter (for 10 checkins at a common area), Munchies (for checkins at five separate campus dining facilities), and College Explorer (for checkins to any 10 different campus locations).

I am pleasantly surprised to see New Zealand as bright as it is considering the number of users we have here. I predict that by the end of this year, we’ll be much brighter on a similar list.

Remember when no one had color screens & cameras on their mobiles..and, suddenly everyone had one? I think the rate of adoption of smartphones - facilitated by low-end cost effective models will also happen at a similar pace.

If ever there was a time for Foursquare to give someone a badge, this is it: International Space Station Commander and NASA Astronaut Doug Wheelock has just checked-in from space using Foursquare, marking the first time a location-based app has been used from the great beyond. And yes, he’s getting a very special NASA Explorer badge to mark the occasion, along with the following congratulatory message:

“You are now 220 miles above Earth traveling at 17,500 mph and unlocked the NASA Explorer Badge! Show this badge and get a free scoop of astronaut ice cream.”

SCVNGR Teams Up with Universities to Introduce Students to Campus This Fall →

Location-based social gaming apps are making a major push to become the app of choice for university students during the back-to-school season.

In mid-September, Foursquare announced the launch of its Foursquare for Universities program, complete with school-themed badges and official partnerships with 20 universities. Other apps, like Whrrl and Gowalla, have designed similar outreach schemes.

But while those services have mainly limited their offerings to providing short snippets of information at various checkin locations around campus, or badges for studying late at the library, Google Ventures-backed SCVNGR has gone a few steps further. The startup announced that it partnered with its 350th university this week, the result of an aggressive outreach strategy to college admissions and orientation programs over the last couple of years.

Foursquare Surpasses 3 Million User Registrations

Foursquare now has more than 3 million users, if the site’s public user registration numbers are correct.

The 3 millionth member appears to be Brian S. from St. Louis, Missouri, who has yet to check in to any venues via the mobile-based social network.

Foursquare’s growth has been accelerating rapidly lately. The service hit 2.6 million users on August 2, up from 725,000 in March. The launch of Facebook Places, which many thought would bring about the startup’s demise, instead resulted in the biggest day of signups ever, CEO Dennis Crowley recently revealed.

What a phenomenal tool! SCVNGR, as the trend these days is give technologies names with as few vowels as possible, is a checkin app similar to Fourquare, but with several key differences.

SCVNGR presents itself as a game, rather than social status tool, and encourages its users to develop checkin games in their area.

Imagine the potential of this in education. You could have your students visit specific spots in a historical area, or create a game for your incoming freshmen to find locations around campus.

This is a really cool take on a technology some people haven’t cared for so far. I hope this takes off.
