The Mindset List: Class of 2016

Here are some of my favorites from this year’s Mindset List for this year’s college freshman class:

    • Before they purchase an assigned textbook, they will investigate whether it is available for rent or purchase as an e-book.
    • They watch television everywhere but on a television.
    • A significant percentage of them will enter college already displaying some hearing loss.
    • They have lived in an era of instant stardom and self-proclaimed celebrities, famous for being famous.

I Heart iPads Not for What it Does

You see, I love iPads but not for what it does on the device. I love them because it is a mindset changer.

It is my gauge on whether or not we are ready to move beyond our legacy concepts and into a different way of looking at technology. I love the challenges it puts in front of people.

You see, many educators want the iPad. We engage in the rich potential these devices have in the classroom. After excitement and the thoughts of all that is possible, I bend their minds by dropping on them a few things:

    1. Typing
    2. Printing
    3. Projecting

    Fear. Cringing. Back stepping.

What do you think? Are we too married to older technologies in the classroom? Would moving to a more collaborative system (iPads/mobile devices) give up too much control? Or are we putting too much faith in a device that’s less than a year old?
