How to use an iPad to add voice comments to grading

The app they’re using is called iAnnotate PDF, which, well, is an annotation app for PDFs. I normally wouldn’t recommend an app that costs $10 [foreshadowing], but in this case it’s absolutely worth every penny. Imagine having students submit work via a Dropbox folder, then annotating and sending it back to them via email. Simple, paperless, and stronger feedback than simply writing.

The app is an evolution of the hugely popular augmented audio app for Nolan’s ‘Inception’ movie which includes the context driven player that team RJDJ developed for their recently released Music Zones (formerly a Project Now) music player. The Smart Notebook on iPad is designed to make many of the tools available on the Smart Board interactive whiteboard available to students on their mobile tablets, including interaction with teachers. The app is designed to let students open any Smart Notebook file from an e-mail or file-sharing Web site, write, erase, add text, move objects, and insert images. Students can also use the iPad camera roll to drop images into Smart Notebook software pages.

iPad Screencasting: Educreations and Explain Everything →

Sharing because there’s a reasonable review of Explain Everything, one of my new favorite iPad screencasting apps.

Explain Everything is another iPad-friendly screencasting app with even more capabilities. While Explain Everything costs $2.99 in the iTunes app store, the features of this application make it worth the price. In addition to the basic editing features that Educreations offers, Explain Everything allows users to crop images, insert live web pages, and add cool annotation effects such as arrows, laser pointers, and typed text. Moreover, when you’ve finished recording your presentation, you can reorder your screens and then export your presentation in a variety of ways (email a link, post to YouTube, or upload to Dropbox or Evernote). For those of us who need a little help navigating the tools, there are video guides and print guides, along with an online showcase for some inspiration.

A Corona teacher has developed a handheld-computer application to call on students randomly and ask them questions that are easy or hard enough for their current learning level.

It technically works on the iPad, but was designed for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Not too shabby for $2.99. Here’s the iTunes store link.

A new iPhone app from the Arbor Day Foundation lets you identify trees on the go — and even geo-tag them to start a national tree inventory system.

Smartphone App Makes Book Citations a Snap →

A new smartphone application takes most of the grunt work out of citing books in scholarly papers.

Quick Cite, which costs 99 cents and is available for both iPhones and Android-based phones, uses the camera on a smartphone to scan the bar code on the back of a book. It then e-mails you a bibliography-ready citation in one of four popular styles—APA, MLA, Chicago, or IEEE.

We all know what happens when you walk and look at your phone at the same time: accidents happen (seriously, click here to laugh). Well now, you can avoid running into things while you are reading e-books on your smartphone by using the MegaReader app. MegaReader announced a new feature, the “Heads Up Display”. This feature overlays the e-book text onto a live feed coming from the phone’s front-facing camera.

I’m not the only one who sees premonitions of car accidents…right?
