I’m participating in an event for the blind and visually impaired

It’s called the White Cane Walk, and it’s sponsored by the Cleveland Sight Center. As a participant in the White Cane Walk, I will learn how to use a white cane, as well as act as a sighted guide partner.

I’m trying to raise money for the Cleveland Sight Center as part of this event. They provide some outstanding support and advocacy services, and I’d be honored if you would consider donating. The minimum donation is $10, and every dollar makes an impact!

If you’d like to donate, you can do so via my donation page here. The guy in the photo isn’t me. It’s a participant from last year.

As an apology for shilling for donations for a worthy cause, here’s a picture of some newborn puppies.

Also, if you’re not in a position to donate, but still want to contribute, please consider reblogging this post.

See, this is the problem with trying to justify cutting workers’ rights and pay by saying you’re poor when you make almost $200k a year. View high resolution

Run a Website or Blog? You Can Help Japan With One Code Snippet

If you run your own site — and we know lots of you do — you can use your pageviews and influence to help Japanese people struggling to recover from yesterday’s devastating natural disasters. All you need is a couple lines of code from the Hello Bar.

We showed off the Hello Bar a while ago; it’s a slender bar that floats at the top of your website, giving visitors a brief message and a link.

Best of all, you only have to insert the code snippet on your site once. From a convenient web dashboard, you can customize the bar with your colors and text. You can also tweak the behaviors of the bar and easily turn it on or off from the dashboard. All of this makes it incredibly easy to solicit donations for Japan now, then turn the bar off or change the message and link later, if you so desire.

That code can be used on a Tumblr, WordPress or Blogger blog, too; here are some detailed instructions.

NOTE: Hello Bar requires registration if you want to change the settings, but this Mashable article gives you the code to put in your Tumblr description if you want to bypass that. After signing up with just your name, email, and “company,” it’ll ask you for a Beta Key. Use “helpjapan”.

The caveat is that the open/close buttons on Hello Bar will occupy the same space as the Follow/Unfollow Block buttons in the top right corner. You can change this if you can change the Hello Bar settings to display those buttons on the left (which again, requires registration).

I promise I will not be asking this all the time

I’m participating in an event this June called the White Cane Walk (more info here). This is an annual fundraising event sponsored by the Cleveland Sight Center. They provide support services for those who are blind or visually impaired, and work to increase awareness of the White Cane Law designed to protect them.

As a participant, I’ll learn how to use a white cane (while blindfolded), and how to serve as a sighted guide. This is very much an experiential event.

I am trying to raise donations for this. I promise I will not be spamming your Dashboard about it every day.

If this is a cause that you connect with, please consider donating toward my (extremely modest) goal of $100. This goal will be added into my team’s overall goal of $1000. Donation information for me is at this page (it will be a photo of former event participants, not me).

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to duck to avoid the thrown tomatoes from the people who find public requests for donations to be in poor taste. I believe in this cause; can’t fault a guy for trying :o)

PS: If you donate, I won’t be upset if you use your Tumblr name instead of your real name.
